Editing and Enjoying my Margaritas

Editing and Enjoying my Margaritas Editing and Enjoying Margaritas: This past week has been extremely busy with Savanah and I learning all the different aspects of editing videos and the cool gadgets that make a plain video into something interesting. Having the three of us apart of the family business is fun but sometimes you have a bunch of hard heads getting their opinions across. It would be a really cool reality show and since we are a sort of rags to riches story I think people would enjoy it.

People who think they can just go in and create videos with no experience blow my mind. Editing is definitely an art and there is so much to learn with each video we produce. Sometimes when Daniel is telling me how to go into programs and files etc……..I zone out only because the artist in me turns deaf but I know what I am learning is necessary to my career and our business.

Seeing Daniel and I interact with each other in the interview video was really a lot of fun because we usually say the same thing just obviously in different ways. Daniel is the “Mars” version of my “Venus”. Savanah was laughing because she would stop the video saying, “You both said the same thing even though it didn’t seem like it at first.” But I have to say listening to myself talk was about as entertaining as the stock market reports. After the first time I was fine but after listening to myself talk for the 20th time I was ready to go bald from wanting to pull my hair out and let us not forget Savanah reacting like a 16 year old when the computer acted up and okay I’ll admit it I turned 16 a few times myself.

When I was learning to be a medicine woman it never occurred to me that my story would make a difference and when I added belly dance into the mix I just figured I had a cool cocktail called “Leyla’s Margarita.”  It’s weird I know but when I view life I tend to look at it from a beverage point of view only because there are so many varieties of concoctions out in the world. And looking back at my career I realized that I was lucky enough to have shared it with some amazing women. I think sometimes working in this business making a living has made me forget that living a belly dancers life was like finding gold. It’s not the amount of gold you find but what you do with it.

Looking back can also be uncomfortable because I was reminded of memories that I put on the back burner of life. Sometimes this is because they were painful others were inconvenient and with the effort of living life as a belly dancer I placed memories in filing cabinets that weren’t labeled only because I didn’t want to find them, I guess. In the end they always show up and once they are looked at they never appear to be as menacing as they once seemed. But a margarita in hand can dilute just about anything and with the never ending editing……..I was grateful one was occasionally in my hand.

I thought wow they are going to think I drink through all my videos so please know that I don’t usually drink, make videos and edit…….this was a special occasion. No telling what you would be seeing if I did………hum might be interesting to say the least.

Anyways I hope you enjoy the interview and please feel free to comment if you have any thoughts. Savanah is the editor of the video and Daniel and I are so proud of her. I mean we all know it’s got to be hard for anyone to work with their own mother and just so you all know…….she still likes me! Here’s the link to the video preview of Daniel interviewing me on Belly Dance Village

On another note I wanted to ask you all a favor. I would like to keep the interviews of amazing belly dancers coming for BDV so if any of you have dance friends who you think should be interviewed, write me a paragraph telling me why they are the cats meow. Those who write me and an interview ensues will get a prize for their effort and time.

Also my book is in the hands of a wonderful woman Beth Salimbeni a former publisher and editor in her own right. So cross your fingers that we can get the book in order meaning, me fixing my way of writing like I talk. When I handed Beth my book I felt like a school child handing in an essay that I knew had mistakes in it but my time was up and I had no choice. It was weird how I turned into a kid wondering what grade I would get. Only time will tell and I have to say……….the clock is ticking along with my heart beat.

Annnddddd……….yes I have a new video coming up, Traveling Steps that I will get out asap. It will be called Traveling Steps Leyla Style and since they are my own creation I am anxious to get them out especially for troupes looking for something different. But I have to say, with creating and editing this video definitely no margaritas!!
